DUS MAHA VIDYA

दस  महाविद्या

The ten great learnings are related with Sati, Shiva and Parvati, all synonymous of the same Shakti (power). She is also known as Nav Durga, Chamunda, Vishnupriya etc and is worshipped. The origin of this ten great knowledge is as follows.

Daksha Prajapati, the father of Sati, once performed a religious sacrifice (Yagya) in which he invited all the deities and sages, except his own Son-in-law lord Shiva, because of his jealousy towards him.

Sati wanted to be present at that occasion but Lord Shiva refused to give permission, thinking it was improper for her to go without the invitation. But she was unmoved:
. She said "I will certainly got to the Yagya performed by Daksha Prajapati, I would either get the fortune of that religious sacrifice for my dearest, deity of the deities, husband or else I would destroy that religious sacrifice itself."

Sati's eyes became red. She looked at Lord Shiva violently, her lips began to flutter, and her complexion became dark. The fire of her anger made her appearance look frightened and violent.

Such an appearance of Sati was frightening even for Lord Shiva. Her appearance, which had the blaze and radiance of crores of mid-noon-suns, made her so fearful that he just ran away.

To stop Lord Shiva from running away in all the possible ten directions, Sati manifested herself in to ten different forms. These ten Shaktis (powers) of Sati are known as the ten great knowledge's.

They are:-

1) KALI
2) TARA
3) CHHINNAMASTA
4) SHODASHI
5) BHUVANESHWARI
6) TRIPURA - BHAIRAVI
7) DHUMAVATI
8) BAGLAMUKHI
9) MATANGI
10) KAMALA

Among all the ten great learning’s, Kali is the main. All the other nine are nothing but the violent and somber appearances of Kali. These ten appearances of Mahakali are called the ten great learning’s. These are considered as the powers of Lord Shiva, the Lord of all the knowledge’s. Though these ten great learning’s are worshipped in many other forms and appearance, but these ten forms mentioned above are the main.

The method of worship of all these ten forms is different. KALI, TARA, CHHINNAMASTA, BAGALAMUKHI AND DHOOMAVATI are apparently violent but in reality they are most merciful, where as BHUVANESHWARI, SHODASHI, TRIPUR, BHAIRAVI, MATANGI and KAMALA are the somber appearances. These ten great learnings are the most valuable wealth of the Sadhakas (accomplishers), which give infinite accomplishments and also are capable of introducing the infinity to them.

KALI

Goddess Kali holds the primary position among all the ten great learnings. There is a tale mentioned in the Kalika-Purana. Once the deities went to the Himalayas and eulogized the personifications of the illusions of the world (Mahamaya). According to the Purana this place was the hermitage of Sage Matang. Pleased by them, Bhagavati appeared in the form of Matang's mistress and asked as to whom were they eulogizing.

Instantly a divine appearance manifested from the body of that mistress, which was as dark as a Mountain in complexion. This divine appearance herself answered on behalf of the deities that these deities are eulogizing me.

Since the complexion of that divine appearance was black like a collyrium she was given the name of KALI.

Though the worship of Kali requires proper initiation yet one can attain her blessings by other means also. Goddess Kali is pleased by chanting mantras, doing worship and a sacrifice or burnt offering etc. either on the image, or by the help of Yantras (mystical diagrams) or by any other way shown by an able teacher (Guru).

If goddess Kali is pleased then all the aspirations of man gets fulfilled and he is saved from the dangerous calamities.

Before chanting the mantras the Kali Yantra should be properly worshipped.

TARA
Though Tara & Kali are same yet their complexions are different. Kali complexion is dark whereas Tara complexion is blue. Tara killed the demon 'Hayagreeva'. She has Lord Shiva lying under her feet like a corpse. Her bluish complexion's beauty is magnified manifold by her three eyes, which appear like a blue lotus flowers. In her four hands she has a scissors, a head (skull), a lotus flower and an axe. She wears tiger's skin on her body, and has a necklace of skulls around her neck. She is considered to be very violent in nature, but her eagerness to shower blessings on the devotee is infallible too. So she is the most merciful.

Tara or Ugratara is worshipped for the attainment of powers of speech, pleasures and even salvation. She is also worshipped for the destruction of enemies. Tara is worshipped in the night and is an another appearance of Shakti. She is considered to be the ruler and presider of miraculous effects and accomplishments.

After having their bath all of them became hungry. The complexion of goddess Bhagawati turned dark because of sheer hunger. Jaya and Vijaya asked for something to eat. Goddess Bhagawati told both of them to wait for some time. After sometime they demanded for food again. They were again told by goddess Bhagawati to wait.

Unable to control their hunger Jaya and Vijaya said very politely to Bhagawati that "Mother, give food to her hungry children as soon as it is demanded."

Bhagavati was very pleased by their innocence, she severed her head by her own hand and held the severed head in her left hand, three streams of blood started to ooze out from the neck.

All of them, satisfied their hunger by drinking the blood from the three streams of blood respectively.

She is called Chhinnamasta because of her severed head.

Goddess Chhinnamasta is a symbol of the perception of secrecy. She stands on the seat of white lotus. In her navel 'Yoni Chakra' are situated. The directions itself are her apparel. Her two companions symbolizes the two qualities of TARA (dark) and Raja (medium). She is alive even though her head is severed from her body.

Bagalamukhi or Bagala is one of the ten mahavidyas (great wisdom goddesses

Hinduism
Hinduism is the predominant and indigenous religious tradition of South Asia. Hinduism is often referred to as by its adherents. Generic "types" of Hinduism that attempt to accommodate a variety of complex views span folk and Vedic Hinduism to bhakti tradition, as in Vaishnavism...
. Bagalamukhi Devi smashes the devotee's (or the devotee's enemies') misconceptions and delusions with her cudgel. She is also known as Pitambara in Northern Parts of India.

Iconography

"Bagalamukhi" is derived from "Bagala" (distortion of the original Sanskrit root "valgā") and "mukha", meaning "bridle" and "face", respectively. Thus, the name means one whose face has the power to capture or control. She thus represents the hypnotic power of the Goddess. Another interpretation translates her name as “crane faced”.

Bagalamukhi has a golden complexion and her dress is yellow. She sits in a golden throne in the midst of an ocean of nectar full of yellow lotuses. A crescent moon adorns her head. Two descriptions of the goddess are found in various texts- The Dwi-Bhuja (two handed), and the Chaturbhuja (Four handed).

The Dwi-Bhuja depiction is the more common, and is described as the Soumya or milder form. She holds a club in her right hand with which she beats a demon, while pulling his tongue out with her left hand. This image is sometimes interpreted as an exhibition of stambhana, the power to stun or paralyse an enemy into silence. This is one of the boons for which Bagalamukhi’s devotees worship her. Other Mahavidya goddesses are also said to represent similar powers useful for defeating enemies, to be invoked by their worshippers through various rituals.

Bagalamukhi is also called Pitambaradevi or Brahmastra Roopini and she turns each thing into its opposite. She turns speech into silence, knowledge into ignorance, power into impotence, defeat into victory. She represents the knowledge whereby each thing must in time become its opposite. As the still point between dualities she allows us to master them. To see the failure hidden in success, the death hidden in life, or the joy hidden in sorrow are ways of contacting her reality. Bagalamukhi is the secret presence of the opposite wherein each thing is dissolved back into the Unborn and the Uncreated.

Legend

Once upon a time, a huge storm erupted over the Earth. As it threatened to destroy whole of the creation, all the gods assembled in the Saurashtra region. Goddess Bagalamukhi emerged from the 'Haridra Sarovara', and appeased by the prayers of the gods, calmed down the storm.

The territory of the Bagalamukhi temple in Patan also has several other temples dedicated to Ganesha, Shiva, Saraswati, Guheswar, Bhairava etc. The main difference between any other temple and a Bagalamukhi temple is that if someone worships all the gods in this temple, they would actually worship all 330 million gods and goddesses at one place. Bagalamukhi Devi Temple is situated at Guma in Mandi, in the state of Himachal Pradesh in North India. Large numbers of Hindu devotees offer prayers here to fulfil their wishes. Bagalamukhi Puja is performed by an experienced Pandit, as any mistake in the ritual may result in bad effects.

Bagalamukhi Devi is one of the ten Hindu Goddesses of Power. Bagalamukhi Puja is performed according to Vedic ritual, to defeat enemies. It not only decreases the power of the enemy, but also creates an atmosphere where they become helpless. The Abhimantrit Bagalamukhi Yantra is also used for the same purpose. It protects the person from enemies and evils. There is a beautiful Mandir of Ma Bagalamukhi in Varanasi as well.

Bagalamukhi maha mantra is as below:
OM HLEEM BAGALAMUKHI SARVA DUSHTANAM VAACHAM MUKHAM PADAM STAMBHAYA JIVHAAM KILAYA BUDDHIM VINASHAYA HLEEM OM SVAHA

Bagalamukhi maha mantra's meaning is as below:
Oh Goddess, paralyse the speech and feet of all evil people. Pull their tongue, destroy their intellect.

The Maa Bagala Devi temple of Guwahati in the State of Assam is situated near the famous "Shakti" temple of Kamakhya in the Nilachal Hills.
According to Shri Yogeshwaranand the author of Baglamukhi Sadhna Aur Siddhi these are the main precautions to do baglamukhi sadhna
1.first prepare yourself to do sadhna. It means to do hard work.
2. select a mature Guru and get Diksha.
3. there are two methods of this pious sadhna, first- Dhakshin marg and second Vama marg. In these both margs Dakshin marg is understood better because of Vedic method, but it is also said that in Kaliyuga Vama marg is better because of early achievements. Hence firstly decide the Marg to which you are going to accept.
4. After getting Dhiksha start your Mantra-Japa according to the directions of your Guru.
5. For any Baglamukhi- sadhak it is necessary to use yellow garments, yellow Aasan, yellow(Haldi)rosary, yellow chandan(sandal),and yellow Bhog(dishes) in the worship of Bhagwati Pitambara.
6. To get Siddhi(kripa of Bhagwati) every one should try to go near Bhagwati by Her worship, Hawan & Mantra- Japa, it means Adwet Bhava. (Adwet Bhava stands for that there is no difference between you and your Devta).
7.Every Sadhak (Priest or worshipper) should never tease to any Jeeva---any animal, any bird or any human. He should never try to do such any work by which anybody hurts or his soul hurts.
8. Bhagwati Bagla is Vashnavi Shakti, so She is understood the Palanhara of the world. Every girl, lady is a part of This Mahashakti, so never tease or harash women. A sadhak should always respect them like Bhagwati.
Above all directions are used in both Marga(ways) of Sadhna. These both margs are the ways who carry a Sahak to his last Lakshya(aim)---Moksha.
But some Sadhak use this Mahavidhya in Kamya-Karm. To do these Karmas one should use accurate methods, which are told by his Gurudev. In these Kamya Karmas this Mahavidhya is used to kill anybody, attract anybody,to make mad like any body , or such like these things. This Mahavidya is mainly used for Stambhan,Ucchatan,Vashikaran etc. To get victory in elections & suits this Mahavidhya is highly effected. The enemies of a Bagla-Sadhak can not stand before him. They are destroyed like a mosquito. Any Kritya-Prayoga can not stand before this Mahavidhya. This Mahavidhya is also said Pervidhya-Grasani. It means any Prayog madeby your enemy or done by any other Tantrik can never effect any Bagla-Sadhak.
This Mahavidhya is used in various ways. But one should not use it above mentioned methods. You may protect yourself ,but never harm to any one by using the power of This greatest Mahavidhya. But by any reason if a Sadhak becomes compelled to use these methods, he should learn them by his Gurudev.

Baglamukhi sadhna is one of the great achievement in life because when you start doing baglamukhi sadhna it is the symbol that you are on the right path of the life that is self knowledge or moksha. Hurdles in the path of moksha are kama, krodha, lobha , moha & ahankar. These are our internal enemies which can not be killed physically. When you start baglamukhi sadhna with no desire of fruit than you will feel that you are becoming more energetic & you are getting control on your thoughts because thoughts are first reason to do the good things or bad things. You will become what you think. And when you have control over it you can become what you want & you will achieve every goal in life.

Story of Shiva Lingam - Why Shiva is worshipped in the Phallic Form

This is an interesting story regarding the worship of Lord Shiva in the phallic form. It is believed that once Brahma and Vishnu, the two deities of the Trinity, got into an argument regarding their supremacy. Lord Brahma declared himself to be more admired, being the creator. While the preserver, Vishnu, pronounced that he commanded more admiration. Just then a huge pillar of fire (lingam), called as Jyotirlinga, appeared in flames, before them. This Lingam enthralled both Brahma and Vishnu, with its hastily increasing size.

With this incident, they forgot their quarrel and decided to find its size. Vishnu took the form of boar and went to the netherworld. Brahma assumed the form of a Swan and flew to the skies. However both of them were unsuccessful in completing the self-assumed tasks. At that time, Shiva appeared out of the lingam and acknowledged that he was the progenitor of both, Brahma and Vishnu. So, he should be worshipped in his phallic (lingam) form, and not in the anthropomorphic form.
